Now Accepting Entries for the 22nd Annual Model Exhibit: Symbiosis

Deadline to submit: Friday, May 31, 2019

For 22 years Seattle Architecture Foundation has hosted the Architectural Model Exhibit, an opportunity for local architects and designers to connect and share their work with the Seattle community. We are now accepting submissions for our 22nd Annual Architectural Model Exhibit: Symbiosis, which will be open to the public from September 11th to November 23rd, 2019.

Symbiosis celebrates mutually beneficial relationships – the positive products and constructive outcomes of interdependence. Today’s interconnected world benefits from design based in this holistic concept, where the efficacy of group interaction is greater than the impact of acting alone. An architecture of symbiosis brings disparate entities together in an impactful whole.

For the 22nd Annual Architectural Model Exhibit, SAF invites local designers to submit models of varying media produced for both conceptual and presentation use. Participants are encouraged to explore different types of model formats and techniques. Entries should engage with our exhibit theme of Symbiosis. Possible avenues for investigation may include but are not limited to architecture’s reciprocal relationship with community, a city’s discourse with nature, or social media’s connection with the built environment.

Because It Rains

Presented by AIA Seattle
On display through May 25
At the Center for Architecture and Design

Recipient of AIA Seattle’s 2018 Emerging Professionals Travel Scholarship, Laura Bartunek Assoc. AIA explored the concept of rain as a creative catalyst within design. Rain, so often approached as a universal foe to be deflected away from buildings, became the focus as both an ecological and cultural phenomenon that can challenge how we engage with our environment. Bartunek sought out five notorious rains found in Florida, New Mexico, Kauai, London and Norway, experiencing and studying the individuality of rain through the lens of architecture. The exhibit catalogs these tales of rain through a series of climate illustrations and architectural research models, asking and inspiring us to think differently about our weather.
