Main Street School Annex
1903, unknown; addition, 1910, James Stephen; rehabilitation, 1989, Kovalenko Hale Architects (LM)
307 Sixth Avenue S.
This wood framed structure was built as an annex to the 1873 Main Street School (destroyed),
which stood at the corner of Sixth Avenue S. and S. Main Street. This annex was constructed to house Seattle's
first kindergarten on land donated by the widow of Bailey Gatzert, Seattle's eighth mayor.
The front porch, featuring ionic columns supporting a dentiled pediment, was added by Seattle School District architect, James Stephen, in 1910. The building operated as a school until 1921. Threatened with demolition, the annex was purchased by Historic Seattle in 1974, and was the first transaction made by the organization. The building was later sold with protective covenants and now provides office space.
