A Sustainable Re-Positioning:  5th & Madison

and 901 5th Avenue

A Green Building Tour
Friday, September 12
Two Groups: 10:00am – 11:00am and 11:30am – 12:30pm
$15 advance registration required.  Logistics sent with registration.
The 5th & Madison residential tower is the centerpiece of an unprecedented repositioning of an entire city block in downtown Seattle.  Directly adjacent to the Central Library, the project includes renovation of the existing 1973 40-story Bank of California office tower, now known as 901 5th Avenue, and development of one of the city’s newest and largest privately-owned public green spaces.  Working closely with Beacon Capital Partners, Kennedy Wilson, and Rreef, and the city of Seattle’s Department of Planning and Development, the project is one of the first in the country to be designed to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold standards for an entire city block.  The plan of the residential tower optimizes resident privacy and views by limiting each of the 24 floors to a maximum of six units.  The 126 residential units, which opened for occupancy in October 2007, set a new benchmark for Seattle by being the first to exemplify Seattle’s “tall skinny” vision for downtown.  Architect Todd Stine, Ruffcorn Mott Hinthorne Stine, and Asset Manager Alex Bennett, Kennedy Wilson, will share their experiences in designing and renovating these projects and explain how the buildings meet the LEED Gold standard for sustainability.

Design for Livability Conference Coming in September

How will we design our communities to accommodate enormous population growth, yet respond to critical climate change issues and improve our environment, economy and standard of living now and for future generations?

How do we change the American Dream from a society that chooses poorly-planned, sprawling development to one that prefers vibrant, walkable well designed neighborhoods?

AIA Seattle, the Cascade Land Conservancy and Allied Arts are joining together to present a three-day symposium on the questions of sustainable cities and how they can work.  The conference is designed for professionals, developers, policy makers and the public to explore design innovations to enhance our quality of life and respect the very assets that make this region special.

The 2008 Bungalow Fair enters its second decade as the premier event of its kind in the Pacific Northwest and Historic Seattle’s most popular yearly offering. Town Hall Seattle once again provides a warm and inviting setting for a show and sale of antiques and new work by fifty of the nation’s leading designers and craftspeople in metal, tile, glass, textiles, ceramics, and lighting, antique dealers, architects, and interior designers. The Fair is an opportunity to learn about early twentieth century architecture and design and to ask questions and get answers from knowledgeable people in the field. It is also an opportunity for those who have been won over by Arts & Crafts period furniture and decoration to be visually stimulated and to think about ways in which to incorporate the many old and new offerings presented here into their homes.

Co-sponsored by Old House Interiors, Arts & Crafts Homes, Masins Fine Furnishings, Rejuvenation, and Daniels Development Company.  Accommodations provided by the Inn at Virginia Mason.
